Times I will never forget. I was in a band, we did shows, we had performance pieces, bands came to me for names, and a lot of stuff I am still very proud of.

I was so involved in the music scene then. I was working with Kell Fox and Tom Efinger on the Commodity Fetish project. I will also always love Friends of Doctor Mabuse, Stu Nelson and Bill Kirby at the time. We had some great times and recorded music and did performance pieces that I am still very proud of.

Included: Commodity Fetish live at Machine Culture, a big chunk of the show performed at the Billings Center Theater at the University of Vermont. "My time is up." Cuts included: Commoditization of Labor, Zen Kitchen, Television Communists. Friday night, long ago, and I have taken to the airwaves to do Party Radio, a regular sign up spot at WRUV-FM. I have taken this chance to flash some of my favorite new alternative music with a slight celebratory air, if such is possible with proto-industrtial music. Part Two seems to have become lost. Kathy Fors is in the studio helping me select songs as only she can.

1991-12-25 Blackhouse at Christmas

All during this period I absolutely loved the band BLACKHOUSE. They combined an excellent hard edged sound with a message that was distinct and consistent. It was instructive as well as a lot of fun to the ears. Some great hard grooves to be found here.

The band is a strongly Christian one and their music shows that. So, what better to do on Christmas Day 1991 than to feature a proto-industrial kind of music that wishes happy birthday to Jesus? Much respect to Sterling Cross and Ivo Cutler, the members of the band.

I can only understand so much, and then it all goes blank.

This program takes place at the conclusion of the spring semester at the University of Vermont, and so in some ways this show tries to recognize that. However, it also celebrates local music culture in Burlington, Vermont as we look at the Commodity Fetish live program that took place at UVM entitled on the previous weekend. Then there is a lot more Commodity Fetish music with some other things thrown in for variety.

The sweet voice of Adid greets us at the beginning of this program, but it is a dark session after that. Orchestras, metal banging, sad singing, poetry, dire predictions and a lot more. Not dismal, but dark and stuck in the reality of 1994. Who knows, we may still be there! You decide.

There is some really nice stuff here jammed into a rather dissimilar pastiche. I do like taking things from television, then songs from television programs, sounds from movies about television and various types of more or less modern songs about television, and then to weave it alltoether into a mildly toxic gruel for your edification. I liked it quite a bit.

It is a story that goes back a ways and concerns the debate handbook we did each spring-summer to earn money for the debate program. I called on volunteer labor, and as we all know, some of that is wonderful and some is not so dependable. The point was to try and get as much effort as possible from everyone towards the main goal of finishing the project. In describing this process to people I often used the metaphor of the movie with Frank Sinatra., Cary Grant and Sophia Loren "The Pride and the Passion." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pride_and_the_Passion] The struggle to "pull the cannon" in that movie involves main characters, people who show up and help for a day, people who run away at night when the going gets tough, people who pledge a short amount of time -- but in the end the huge cannon gets to Avila to rout the French. "Pulling the cannon" became the expression for "working on the debate handbook."

Thus, this program. Deep in the midst of "pulling the cannon" this program is a dark industrial look at the process of focused work-drudgery. But even then it has its very relaxing side. This is an excellent program. Music included: Zoviet France, Nurse with Wound, Lustmord, Etant Donnes, Nocturnal Emissions, and even more Zoviet France.

Image via WikipediaThis is a delightful mix of all sorts of things -- music, spoken word, sound effects, noise collage, media ecology and a lot of other stuff. The month is June, the juices are flowing, and in my case they are creative juices, trying to find interesting sounds and put them together into a whole that says something more than the parts. Sitting here 18 years later, I am not sure what that whole is, but listening to it brought me a lot of smiles. Almost a swoon.

Try it yourself. There is no playlist. I think I can understand why, it would have been hell to read off all of the parts of this program.

Sound and voice are put together with a random plan that becomes an incredible audio vengeance that may change your ideas and feelings later. You may or may not be aware of it. This kind of thing is a new construct for me, and I hope you enjoy it. After all of the noxious noise, there is a normal sport of ending that even make you feel OK about the world. The last song is way simple but it always makes me feel better. It still took me a few years to follow through on this message and purge my life of television. See, it took the program a while to sink in. Try it!

Eight track studios are affordable and manageable at this point and people are doing some great things with them.

Music included:
The program begins with a lot of fairly simple and interesting eight track music made by individuals with a dour outlook, including Eric Huffman and Chris & Cosey. At about minute 31 we get to hear a live show in Portland, maine called "You will have been there," by Commodity Fetish. After the CF set (very rare live recording) we listened to even more stuff done on eight track systems, by Free World, Chris & Cosey and more.

Cover of Test Dept.Today I am featuring a few things. First Graeme Revell's release Insect Musicians, an album where all sounds are taken from samples of natural insect noises. Then, they are put together as songs. Other music is inserted, like Frank Chickens (from Japan), Voice of Authority, and Acoustic Iatrogenesis. Then, we will hear almost the entire new release by the band Test Department.

About Test Department:

Test Dept's formation in 1981 in the decaying docklands of South London, was an urgent reaction to the materialistic drift and reactionary conservatism of the prevailing musical and political culture. TD rejected the conventional and developed a style that reflected the decay of their surroundings scavenging the unregenerated wastelands for raw materials, and transforming found industrial items into designed, sculptural instruments. Suitably armed they forged a hard rhythmic sonic battery, fusing found sound samples and cutting edge electronics in the construction of a dynamic physical totality. Their infamous sonic assaults were challenging and demanding for audience and performers alike, a test of physical endurance that journeyed through the sonic pain threshold and into a cathartic energy release. The 'Stakhanovite Sound' was a furnace that forged an attitude of total collective commitment, embracing the spirit of punk with an avant revolutionary sensibility that sought to challenge the status quo. It is the first of April, and I am willing to play the fools. The collapse of the Jim and Tammy Bakker television ministry sets the stage for this session of foolishness. Many other television ministers are paraded amidst the accompanying industrial music here. Maybe the most convincing is the leader of the Temple of Psychic Youth, Genesis P. Orridge. Well, at least he is sincere and consistent, and also doesn't seem to be fascinated by getting rich. I would like to apologize to the name and memory of Jesus Christ and how blasphemed he was by these folks.

1987-01-14 The Police Have Been Wonderful

I have always felt a little uncomfortable with the police. One of the reasons is that they remind me of soldiers, what with the guns and the uniforms. The Brazil clip that begins this program sets the stage for how I feel, and I think the movie is one of the most powerful depictions of an oppressive state I have ever seen. And the music available mirrors this sort of feeling. From Maggie Thatcher's praise of the police conduct during the miner's strike to the discussion of a police state by Marshall McLuhan to the clips from the 1984 movie to the napalm scene in Apocalypse Now to Taxi Driver to the diving buzz bombs and back. This is an excellent and very powerful program that goes far beyond the theme of the police, to explore the uses of power, domination and human weakness. I say this as I sit here and listen to it 24 years later.

This may be the most diverse sound around. I keep buying releases by them and every one of them seems to be different. I just had to give this project its own day.

I like this short introduction:

The deepest throb of electronics pulse and waver beneath six scraped strings. The acid sear of 3rd-eye-aimed lead guitar strikes out: destination - elsewhere. The car-start buzz, the treated feedback trill, the paradigm blast of Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella. In the 18 years since this Nurse With Wound debut LP, they remain unequalled in terms of sheer outsider invention.Housed in a Dada-spewed sleeve of sado-slave imagery and eye-popping surrealist collage, Chance Meeting... (Lautreamont's famous reply to "What is Surrealism?") single-handedly created and defined an aesthetic and was blamed for plenty more. Nurse with Wound (or shortened as NWW) is the main recording name for British musician Steven Stapleton. Nurse with Wound was originally a band, formed in 1978 by Stapleton, John Fothergill and Heman Pathak.^[1]^[2] The band ranges in many genres such as avant-garde, industrial, noise, dark ambient, and drone. Their early recordings, all made quickly, were heavily influenced by free improvisation and Krautrock and were generally considered industrial music, despite the objections of the group.[edit]By 1981, only Stapleton was left from the original trio and he now regards 1982's Homotopy to Marie, as being the first proper Nurse with Wound release^{[citation needed]}. There are now over 40 full length NWW titles. If you think the Residents are strange, wait until you see the other groups on this label.

Here is the story:

RALPH RECORDS (1972- )Ralph was officially launched by The Residents in 1972 with the release of the "Santa Dog" double 7-inch. At that time, the newly formed The Cryptic Corpration took over the label with visions of running it as a legit record company and not just a vehicle for Residents recordings. During the following years Ralph Records became the home of Snakefinger, Tuxedomoon, Fred Frith, Renaldo & the Loaf, MX-80 Sound, Yello, Art Bears, Rhythm & Noise, Hajime Tachibana, Nash the Slash, Clubfoot Orchestra and, of course, The Residents.In 1986, The Cryptic Corporation, having undergone management shakeup, felt the label business was no longer working as a business model and that it was important to find better distribution for their star act, The Residents. So all artists were released from their contracts and the label was shut down. The Residents were moved onto the higher profile RYKO label for the USA, Torso for Europe, and Wave for Japan.So the Ralph Records office was permanently closed.
Or so The Cryptic Corporation thought.
In 2010, the interest in physical product had become very weak in a culture now obsessed with the availability of music via download. Instant gratification was a difficult monster to fight. But The Cryptic Corporation felt there was still a reason to have items that one could hold in sweaty hands. In the fall of 2010 they unlocked the long bolted door of RALPH RECORDS with the resolve of once again making vinyl LP's with 12" covers one can hold. CD / DVD and downloads would also be available.

He was an amazing talent. He could have been successful as a jazz musician, as a gifted classical guitarist, as the leader of a radical revolutionary hippy band, a music producer, an author of stage musicals, a public advocate and a lot more. But, he decided instead to be all of these things. An innovative and revolutionary musician who did, in a very long career, achieve something that many others with talent had failed to do -- he never sold out. He always did it the way he wanted to. Frank Vincent Zappa. This is a playful salute to Frank and his life and work, and I am sure he would have wanted it that way.

Spring 1994 was a time for self-indulgence and reflection, at least on my radio programs. At least I had stopped my annoying habit of NOT reading the play list that Spring. This is a wide variety of semi-techno songs, and many of them my current favorites. The raw beat-beat-beat of the techno I was following had taken on a new ambient flair, which I really appreciated and enjoyed. With some excellent sound clips layered in this is some mighty fine listening, if I do say so myself.

I know it is hard ti think of this kind of music as "relaxing," I really think that this program is actually relaxing.

I was buying a lot of techno music at this time, including a lot of anthologies. I would go through them and put a star next to songs I really liked. I then reviewed all these anthologies and listened to the songs marked with stars. Then, I collected all of the stars of stars for this program. It is a lot of fun.

Music included: The lack of a play list really is a tragedy this time, because these are all from a wide variety of groups and I could never remember them all. Oh well, no Tuna voice to distract you, just song after song. Most are from Europe and many of these groups are really one-song wonders that came out of studio sessions.

Here we have a look at one of my favorite musical mad men, Edward Ka-Spel (various spellings).

Ka-Spel is probably best known as the lead singer, songwriter and co-founder (with Phil "The Silverman" Knight) of the prolific undergroundband The Legendary Pink Dots, in which he was initially known as D'Archangel. He has also released numerous solo albums (initially featuring other members of the Legendary Pink Dots, and later including contributions from Steven Stapleton), and has worked in various side projects, including The Tear Garden (with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy), and Mimir (with Phil Knight, Christoph Heemann,Jim O'Rourke and others).

His musical output has combined elements of psychedelia, dark folk, goth, industrial, electronic, found noise, sampling, pop and rock in varying degrees. His lyrics have been described as intensely personal and mystical, incorporating recurrent themes from his own personal mythos, and his songwriting and singing have been compared (usually favourably) to Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd. Ka-Spel is a fan of 70's psychedelia as well as Radiohead.

His manner of dress is peculiar. He is rarely seen without wearing a long scarf and either pink or black sunglasses both on and off stage. Earlier on in his career, Ka spel drew black lines on his face and arms, which Phil Knight has referred to as "his cracks," presumably as they resemble the cracked lines in a crumbling statue. Again, as with the sunglasses and scarf, Ka-spel remained constantly in character, wearing the lines at all times. He also often performs barefoot.

Ka-Spel's singing voice is distinctive, especially for listeners outside of England, as it displays characteristics peculiar to the region of England in which he grew up. In addition to his east London/East Anglian accent, Ka-Spel's dialect has what is sometimes misidentified as a lisp, but is actually a form of rhotacism, in which Rs are mispronounced as Ws. This is believed to be a sociolect or a form of "permanent affectation" acquired as a child, rather than a speech disorder as such.

A myth is far more powerful than a simple lie, because a myth is something one uses to shape thoughts and views. There are many popular myths that are fun to explore and celebrate. Here are some that I have used music to explore. Some are far more obvious than others.

The dividing line between safety and the unraveling that just might become a joyous discovery. This really is an excellent collage of beats, backgrounds, voices and noises that create, once again, a very interesting acoustic space. This one just doesn't seem to have aged very much at all.

Sometimes you may feel like you are in paradise. It is very precious and doesn't happen very often. So, you have to luxuriate while you can. The problem is that you may not realize you are in paradise until later, when you are no longer there. Well, it is a journey and so see it as a trip to paradise and back. Very rare, but you need to recognize it as soon as you can. Because before you know it you will be back.

Thus, the feeling behind this week's radio program.

I am still not reading a playlist. This 1993 problem seems to have run on into 1994.

Gary Clail is the subject today. Clail worked originally as a roofer, but during the mid to late 1980s based in Bristol, he became a warm up act for On-U gigs. Clail first released a record in 1985. Several 12"singles were issued between 1985 and 1987, before Clail's first LP for Nettwerk, Tackhead Tape Time, a split effort between Clail and Tackhead. "Television: The Drug of the Nation" by The Beatnigs was remixed by Clail, Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart, on the Alternative Tentacles record label in 1988. In 1989, Clail issued his own album, billed as Gary Clail & On-U Sound System, on On-U Sound, which marked Clail's entrance to the electronic underground scene in Bristol, eventually leading him to work with RCA a couple of years later. This output incorporated several singles and EPs, as well as The Emotional Hooligan album (1991). Clail released a further album on Yelen Records, entitled Keep the Faith (1996). His career was pretty much over after that. Hey, we miss you.

I love this stuff. The megaphone is brilliant, as if to say people should focus on what he is saying, not the sound of his voice.

They have techniques they try to master and what is planned to come out may not come out. Yet, what does come out then gets changed and molded into something very new. A salute to one of my favorite groups. The Residents.

The Residents is an American art collective best known for avant-garde music and multimedia works. The first official release under the name of "The Residents" was in 1972, and the group has since released over sixty albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, ten DVDs. They have undertaken seven major world tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, The Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. Ralph Records, a record labelfocusing on avant garde music, was started by The Residents.
Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to operate under anonymity, preferring instead to have attention focused on their art output. Much outside speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tuxedos - a long-lasting costume now recognized as their signature iconography.
Their albums generally fall into two categories: deconstructions of Western popular music, or complex conceptual pieces, composed around a theme, theory or plot. They are noted for surrealistic lyrics and sound, and disregard for conventional music composition.

Although it is clearly industrial music, it also has a very primitive, almost a Neolithic feel to it. The clanging may be from metal not yet made in the Neolithic period, and the humming might be from mechanical processes still in the distant future, still there is a very wild, uncivilized and yet very free Neolithic feel to the atmopshere created. If you are looking for an acoustic experience on a gray day or a dark night (with just a few lights, enough to create shadows) this is for you.

Some people are so dangerous with their words that they have to be killed. Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi, on and on and on. Add John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert to that list if you want. Whoever said something was "just words" did not understand the power that words have. Had it not been for their words, these people would not have been killed, gunned down by their assassins who hated them because of their words and what they stood for.

Sometimes the tiger you should not ride is the words you feel in your heart.

23 November 1963 an American president was shot. This program is 25 years later.

The names and faces might change, not to protect the innocent by the way, but things seem to remain much the same.

David Berube asked me to sit in for his show one week. He called it "Safe Sex Radio" and so I called it "Dangerous Sex Radio." This is a chance for me to have fun and play some funky tunes. My apologies for the newscast that I had to read at about 25:45. Otherwise, this is a pretty rockin' set for 1988!

This show is composed of a digital tape from the sixth Industrial Strength Dance held down at Border, featuring Marvin X & 174K2, Bill Kirby's Escherhead, Astronauts in Grave Peril and then the Abdo-Men. I had promoted and organized the event. I also announced the groups and read some poetry at the end. The poetry had been produced by a "poetry tree" designed by Jayne Kennedy (acting as Autoreactive Reagant), where many paragraphs had been sliced up and hung from a small tree, and then those attending the show would pick some, arrange them, and post them as poems for the evening. I picked one I liked and read it at the end.

This was an amazing show, and it highlighted some of the finest of what Burlington was producing at the time, a real industrial music subculture with very little copying and a lot of originality. Big thanks to others who made this possible, including Brent Burke, Jayne Kennedy, Matt Sweet, Rick Knight and so many more. Plus the musicians, the late Bill Kirby, Stu Nelson and also those who always wished to remain anonymous (they shall continue to be so). Special recognition to that gifted artist, Bill Kirby, who committed suicide not long after this event. I still miss you, Bill.

When the news is really new, it almost has to be covered up. I seem to have chopped up first some old movies and put them together with some songs, television programs and other fragments to have some fun. Everything you can imagine that might be happening may well be happening. The "evil influences in music" stuff is really quite interesting. This is one of the most eclectic selection of sounds I have ever used on the air.

Connections between industry and the military are fairly common in progressive discussions. Yet, there is also a connection between the military and the church, as a basically pacific Christian faith has been warped into a support for military actions against "them" and a military answer to our problems. We become "defenders of the faith" even if our faith is not threatened but the existence of a religiously free society is. Shame.

I was not happy about the vice presidential debate that had just taken place. Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen? My anger was thus a generating force behind this radio program.

Akira Kurosawa is my favorite director, and his films have had a huge impact on me. I took tracks from Ran and mixed them in with some music to create this radio program. That theme breaks down a bit after the first 20 minutes, but the overall feel of the show continues. I often take inspiration for radio programs from such places, just like music gives me inspiration for fiction writing and even academic writing. Cross fertilization, perhaps?

"The Dark Side" introduction, followed by Tom Baker's final scene as the Doctor on Doctor Who, followed by a mixture of religious verbiage along with some music, industrial and protoindustrial, mixed together. I did play some of my voice tapes made at the time that Jim Jones was convincing those of his flock with him to drink the poison Kool-Aid. These are some of the scariest tapes I have ever heard. "Overcome by religious fervor, this is WRUV-FM, Burlington." Some of this stuff is also taken from the sound tracks of various movies that were mocking television evangelists.

It is true, I was fortunate that blasphemy laws are no longer enforced.

Nice public service announcement from Bernie Sanders telling students not to make so much noise to start off this acoustic item. I guess I just wasn't into reading play lists at this point in time, so it is a guess at best as to what is contained here. Many of the usual suspects, but a few completely unidentifiable items. I have a nice rebuke of Satan near the end, in the name of Berube.

Here are just a few of the music sources i did indicate after my noise pollution rant:
Lustmord, Psychic TV, Zoviet France, Telepathic Request, Nocturnal Emissions, and a lot more. I also hear Residents and Hula in there. There is a nice timeline Nocturnal Emissions thing at the middle.

Two themes here are noise controls by the city and noise from your radio. No escape from noise, apparently. What kinds of noise? What is noise pollution to some is just another request for something on my radio show.

I am not sure what this is, but I am not sure that is a bad thing. After listening to it, I honestly believe that it wants you to put in your own meaning. It is a combination of unusual music, very unusual vocal passages as well as some very interesting songs, such as Catholic Discipline's "Babylon must fall."

This seems to be a second or third hour from a One True Radio program from this date. One True Radio is a free form radio three hour slot at WRUV-FM that I used for some of my more experimental efforts. This, to be sure, is one of these most experimental efforts. Not exactly an upbeat program, but that would be to insert a meaning.

The late 1980's were an amazing time for television evangelism in the USA, and I celebrated as many of its failings as I could. For somepone who is interested in putting voice clips over music, television evangelism is, dare I say it, a God send. Meet Jimmy Swaggart's son, Donnie, Jim and Tammie Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and a gala troupe of rhetorical abusers.

A look at Swaggart from his current website:

Jimmy Lee Swaggart was born March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana. Ministering the Word under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, he preached to stadiums filled with capacity crowds around the world and, pioneered televangelism through his weekly telecast. In the 1980's his television programming transmitted to over 3,000 stations and innumerable cable systems each week. Reverend Swaggart's telecasts were seen by more than 8 million people in the United States and by more than 500 million people worldwide, making it the most widespread mass communication of the Gospel in history!

1985-09-15 Divestment Terror

The question at hand is the divestment of university investments from the apartheid regime of South Africa. The campus is rising in protest, words are being exchanged, and my radio show seemed like a good time to do that. Many of the sound bits here are from the university open public meeting considering the issue. They are mixed together in a strange pattern. The university board of trustees had deadlocked on the motion to divest, and the chair voted against openly and in defiance of the popular will.

I am a bit surprised I did not receive some form of punishment during this period, because I openly mocked many major university administrators by using their own voices. That is always a dangerous tactic.

This is a my version of the program "One True Radio" and offered itself as free form radio with rotating hosts each week. Very late on a weeknight.

There is sound training that defeats you. This radio program is a vain attempt to explore that concept in a musical way.

Kenneth Burke:

In a sense, incongruity is the law of the universe; if not the mystic’s universe, then the real and multiple universe of daily life … Table, chairs, and diners are congruous, since experience has made them so. But table, chairs, living diner, and a dining lady manikin are incongruous. The result is a perspective with interpretative ingredients.We contend that "perspective by incongruity" makes for a dramatic vocabulary, with weighting and counter-weighting, in contrast with the liberal ideal of neutral naming in the characterization of processes.

The College of Musical Knowledge had long been a home for new approaches to music and media. Media Ecology as an acoustic genre involves taking clips and snips from various forms of media and putting them together to reveal new and different ideas and orientations. It is also a lot of fun to listen to.

So much was mixed together here, Negativland, Tapebeatles, Producers for Bob and a lot more. Not sure of it all because there is no formal play list.

I have never really left it, as from time to time it seems to collect my thoughts and give me a lot of focus. Not too "in your face' and a lot of pieces that develop slowly but effectively. Only three groups here, but they have put out so much in this genre that mixing it together was a pleasure.

It was so good that selections from that label made it on to both sides of my radio show -- the Reggae and the experimental, in a fusion that I found very exciting. The use of production techniques and samples also made these songs very innovative at the time. They may not be so innovative now, but they still rock very hard and have an enduring political edge.

How do you compose/ make your music, is it from samples, or are the tunes you play traditional middle-eastern melodies? What motivates you, why do you do it?
Every piece of music Muslimgauze releases is motivated by a political fact, mostly Palestinian, also Iran and Afghanistan are of great interest. Muslimgauze usually take a word or action etc. and from that evolves a basic idea, which is then altered etc. until the finished pieces come to life. I view samples as theft, blatant theft of Kraftwerk and James Brown is common by people with no ideas of their own, these people should be taken to court and erased from view.
Muslimgauze try to construct their own sound, using their own ideas, a basic backbone of Middle Eastern influences, sounds not falling into the 'Arabian Nights' trap all other Western bands fall into.
Motivation is the injustice of the Palestinians, the Zionist aggression against innocent people who have had all they owned taken from them by Zionists using American money and arms. .
The time is coming when everybody and every country will have to take sides, pro-PLO or pro-Zionist, the war to resolve this is not far away.

An apparently basic distinction can be made between noises, recognizable natural sounds (like animal cries, the sound of a running brook or waves breaking on a sandy beach), and, strictly speaking, musical sounds. In the past, musical sounds were produced by the human voice and musical instruments — musical because their use normally was restricted to the production of musical sounds. Noises did not belong to the field of music; nature's sounds were used very rarely and only episodically, but recently their use has increased. What then decides whether a sound can be considered musical? The answer is, the culture of a particular group of human beings.
The term culture may be interpreted at several levels of meaning. In this case It refers to the expectation which people conditioned by a particular culture have of hearing certain sounds or not hearing others. It refers to what has become customary or traditional in a number of definable circumstances — for example, attending a church service, listening to a troubadour returning from the Holy Land, or crowding a modern concert hall to hear a specially trained virtuoso or an orchestra. The specific circumstances in which music is heard are very important because, at least originally, they have much to do with the "musical" character of the sounds heard and the psychic or personal responses of those hearing them. As these cultural circumstances alter, the possibility arises of a corresponding change in what constitutes a musical sound. Sooner or later not only the musicality of various types of sounds, but also the expected character of combinations of these sounds (that is, musical "form") changes in order to satisfy a new kind of desire — the desire to meet psychological needs aroused by new social circumstances, particularly a new type of family life, education, and daily work.

Bill Nelson is a remarkably talented individual, performer and composer. And, he loves to work largely alone. I had saluted him a few months back and got a bunch of new releases and just had fun with them on this day.

And he loves to spend less than two hours on a song from beginning to the end, and some of them took only 20 minutes.

Sometimes I feel like an exile on this planet. This is where I am and this is what I know, but there is a still small voice inside of me saying that this is not my home, that the stars are my home, and that I am merely here in exile. Thus, the theme for this program. Doctor Who (Doctor #2 played by Patrick Troughton) is put on trial by the Timelords and his sentence is to be in exile on Earth in the 20th Century. Well, at least I made it out of the 20th Century and into the 21st.

Cover of Philip GlassIt was powerful. I watched it several times. The music of Philip Glass was hypnotic. This radio program uses some of that music and a lot more. "Out of balance" is a theme well-handled by this radio program.

Koyaanisqatsi (English pronunciation: /ˈkɔɪ.ɑːnɪsˈkɑːtsiː/ KOY-ah-nis-KAHT-see), also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.
The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse stock footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. Reggio explains the lack of dialogue by stating "it's not for lack of love of the language that these films have no words. It's because, from my point of view, our language is in a state of vast humiliation. It no longer describes the world in which we live."^[6] In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsimeans "crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living".^[7] The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film. However, because of copyright issues, the film was out of print for most of the 1990s.^[8]
