Image via WikipediaKenneth Burke called it perspective through incongruity. There can be lights that are so bright they are wholly black. There is a sweetness so strong that it becomes bitter. There is sound training that defeats you. This radio program is a vain attempt to explore that concept in a musical way.

Kenneth Burke:

In a sense, incongruity is the law of the universe; if not the mystic’s universe, then the real and multiple universe of daily life … Table, chairs, and diners are congruous, since experience has made them so. But table, chairs, living diner, and a dining lady manikin are incongruous. The result is a perspective with interpretative ingredients.We contend that "perspective by incongruity" makes for a dramatic vocabulary, with weighting and counter-weighting, in contrast with the liberal ideal of neutral naming in the characterization of processes.

If you don't like one reality, create another is what I always say. OK, maybe it didn't bring the temperature down, but it was full of cool sounds and that made me happy.

The College of Musical Knowledge had long been a home for new approaches to music and media. Media Ecology as an acoustic genre involves taking clips and snips from various forms of media and putting them together to reveal new and different ideas and orientations. It is also a lot of fun to listen to.

So much was mixed together here, Negativland, Tapebeatles, Producers for Bob and a lot more. Not sure of it all because there is no formal play list.

Words and sounds together in a mixture of many of my favorite poetic voices. But then, I don't go in for normal poets too much. I like the slashing and analyzing sort of word play, as Burroughs says, "When you cut into the present the future leaks out."

The summer lies before us with the promise of new life, and of course, the beat of spring. Here is some beaty music with a spring theme. These are mainly "mega mixes" from some of the European dance compilations I had been buying at that time, and so they are raucous and varied with lots of different groups I could not really list here, but they get mentioned on the show.

We are not responsible for mental or behavioral aberrations that may be caused by this broadcast. This is a combination of tapes, broadcasts, snippets, edits, songs written and performed by church members that serve as  soundtracks to the Subgenius experience.

There is no way to list everything that was put into this program. This dense packing of brain cells without proper coolant, like frop, may lead to the continued hearing of this broadcast even after it has stopped. Always emerge from the experience slowly.

1993-03-10 Collusion

I have never really left it, as from time to time it seems to collect my thoughts and give me a lot of focus. Not too "in your face' and a lot of pieces that develop slowly but effectively. Only three groups here, but they have put out so much in this genre that mixing it together was a pleasure.

Music included: Controlled Bleeding, Zoviet France, Nocturnal Emissions, and all taken from multiple releases by each of these groups.

It was also a frenetic pace this week that must tell me something about the pace of my life during that period. I guess you could say it was a brand new second hand experience.

Perched on the sharp edge of winter, the sounds and vibes of a cold and hard environment which is nevertheless alive comes pouring out of this program. The light is fast fading and the air is incredibly dry as well as sharp and cold. Music and sound to accentuate an atmosphere.

1993-01-20 All On You and Me

Image via WikipediaAs you probably know, music from the On-U label has been one of my favorite acoustic categories. It was so good that selections from that label made it on to both sides of my radio show -- the Reggae and the experimental, in a fusion that I found very exciting. The use of production techniques and samples also made these songs very innovative at the time. They may not be so innovative now, but they still rock very hard and have an enduring political edge.

Musical assemblages include: Gary Clail and the On-U Sound System, Mark Stewart and the Maffia, Andy Fairley, Invisible Spike, Voice of Authority, Barmy Army, Tackhead, DJ Spike, and then a little non On-U with Kraftwerk.

How do you compose/ make your music, is it from samples, or are the tunes you play traditional middle-eastern melodies? What motivates you, why do you do it?
Every piece of music Muslimgauze releases is motivated by a political fact, mostly Palestinian, also Iran and Afghanistan are of great interest. Muslimgauze usually take a word or action etc. and from that evolves a basic idea, which is then altered etc. until the finished pieces come to life. I view samples as theft, blatant theft of Kraftwerk and James Brown is common by people with no ideas of their own, these people should be taken to court and erased from view.
Muslimgauze try to construct their own sound, using their own ideas, a basic backbone of Middle Eastern influences, sounds not falling into the 'Arabian Nights' trap all other Western bands fall into.
Motivation is the injustice of the Palestinians, the Zionist aggression against innocent people who have had all they owned taken from them by Zionists using American money and arms. .
The time is coming when everybody and every country will have to take sides, pro-PLO or pro-Zionist, the war to resolve this is not far away.

Cover of The Bonzo Dog BandIt is the end of another year, and another year of genre expanding on my part, as well as a year of learning about music. Here are some of my favorites, not necessarily from the year, but from the current music scene. Instead of an important musical explanation of our place in the world at this time, I came up with some silly sounds that may not represent anything at all.

1992-12-09 Pro-Noise

An apparently basic distinction can be made between noises, recognizable natural sounds (like animal cries, the sound of a running brook or waves breaking on a sandy beach), and, strictly speaking, musical sounds. In the past, musical sounds were produced by the human voice and musical instruments — musical because their use normally was restricted to the production of musical sounds. Noises did not belong to the field of music; nature's sounds were used very rarely and only episodically, but recently their use has increased. What then decides whether a sound can be considered musical? The answer is, the culture of a particular group of human beings.
The term culture may be interpreted at several levels of meaning. In this case It refers to the expectation which people conditioned by a particular culture have of hearing certain sounds or not hearing others. It refers to what has become customary or traditional in a number of definable circumstances — for example, attending a church service, listening to a troubadour returning from the Holy Land, or crowding a modern concert hall to hear a specially trained virtuoso or an orchestra. The specific circumstances in which music is heard are very important because, at least originally, they have much to do with the "musical" character of the sounds heard and the psychic or personal responses of those hearing them. As these cultural circumstances alter, the possibility arises of a corresponding change in what constitutes a musical sound. Sooner or later not only the musicality of various types of sounds, but also the expected character of combinations of these sounds (that is, musical "form") changes in order to satisfy a new kind of desire — the desire to meet psychological needs aroused by new social circumstances, particularly a new type of family life, education, and daily work.

1992-11-25 Bill Nelson Again

Bill Nelson is a remarkably talented individual, performer and composer. And, he loves to work largely alone. I had saluted him a few months back and got a bunch of new releases and just had fun with them on this day.


And he loves to spend less than two hours on a song from beginning to the end, and some of them took only 20 minutes.

Take sounds produced by someone else in another context and put them together to create a brand new piece.  This really puts it all together. The other thing is that these groups do what I have been doing on my radio for some time now. And, of course, the Church of the Subgenius is there.
