Nice public service announcement from Bernie Sanders telling students not to make so much noise to start off this acoustic item. I guess I just wasn't into reading play lists at this point in time, so it is a guess at best as to what is contained here. Many of the usual suspects, but a few completely unidentifiable items. I have a nice rebuke of Satan near the end, in the name of Berube.

Here are just a few of the music sources i did indicate after my noise pollution rant:
Lustmord, Psychic TV, Zoviet France, Telepathic Request, Nocturnal Emissions, and a lot more. I also hear Residents and Hula in there. There is a nice timeline Nocturnal Emissions thing at the middle.

Two themes here are noise controls by the city and noise from your radio. No escape from noise, apparently. What kinds of noise? What is noise pollution to some is just another request for something on my radio show.

1988-03-16 Listen Now Pay Later

I am not sure what this is, but I am not sure that is a bad thing. After listening to it, I honestly believe that it wants you to put in your own meaning. It is a combination of unusual music, very unusual vocal passages as well as some very interesting songs, such as Catholic Discipline's "Babylon must fall."

This seems to be a second or third hour from a One True Radio program from this date. One True Radio is a free form radio three hour slot at WRUV-FM that I used for some of my more experimental efforts. This, to be sure, is one of these most experimental efforts. Not exactly an upbeat program, but that would be to insert a meaning.

1988-03-16 Religious Vomit

The late 1980's were an amazing time for television evangelism in the USA, and I celebrated as many of its failings as I could. For somepone who is interested in putting voice clips over music, television evangelism is, dare I say it, a God send. Meet Jimmy Swaggart's son, Donnie, Jim and Tammie Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and a gala troupe of rhetorical abusers.

A look at Swaggart from his current website:

Jimmy Lee Swaggart was born March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana. Ministering the Word under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, he preached to stadiums filled with capacity crowds around the world and, pioneered televangelism through his weekly telecast. In the 1980's his television programming transmitted to over 3,000 stations and innumerable cable systems each week. Reverend Swaggart's telecasts were seen by more than 8 million people in the United States and by more than 500 million people worldwide, making it the most widespread mass communication of the Gospel in history!

Reverend Jimmy Swaggart first started his television ministry in 1975 and it continues today, over 33 years later, airing nationally and internationally to a potential viewing audience of over 80 million. The weekly Jimmy Swaggart Telecastand A Study in the Word are seen nationwide and abroad on 78 channels in 104 countries and live over the Internet.

1985-09-15 Divestment Terror

The question at hand is the divestment of university investments from the apartheid regime of South Africa. The campus is rising in protest, words are being exchanged, and my radio show seemed like a good time to do that. Many of the sound bits here are from the university open public meeting considering the issue. They are mixed together in a strange pattern. The university board of trustees had deadlocked on the motion to divest, and the chair voted against openly and in defiance of the popular will.

I am a bit surprised I did not receive some form of punishment during this period, because I openly mocked many major university administrators by using their own voices. That is always a dangerous tactic.

This is a my version of the program "One True Radio" and offered itself as free form radio with rotating hosts each week. Very late on a weeknight.

Techno beat big time. Not the fairly commercial stuff that it became later on, but with a sense of fresh in the way artists were exploring into and experimenting with the techniques they suddenly found that they had at hand.

1993-07-14 Dark in Bright

Image via WikipediaKenneth Burke called it perspective through incongruity. There can be lights that are so bright they are wholly black. There is a sweetness so strong that it becomes bitter. There is sound training that defeats you. This radio program is a vain attempt to explore that concept in a musical way.

Kenneth Burke:

In a sense, incongruity is the law of the universe; if not the mystic’s universe, then the real and multiple universe of daily life … Table, chairs, and diners are congruous, since experience has made them so. But table, chairs, living diner, and a dining lady manikin are incongruous. The result is a perspective with interpretative ingredients.We contend that "perspective by incongruity" makes for a dramatic vocabulary, with weighting and counter-weighting, in contrast with the liberal ideal of neutral naming in the characterization of processes.

If you don't like one reality, create another is what I always say. OK, maybe it didn't bring the temperature down, but it was full of cool sounds and that made me happy.

The College of Musical Knowledge had long been a home for new approaches to music and media. Media Ecology as an acoustic genre involves taking clips and snips from various forms of media and putting them together to reveal new and different ideas and orientations. It is also a lot of fun to listen to.

So much was mixed together here, Negativland, Tapebeatles, Producers for Bob and a lot more. Not sure of it all because there is no formal play list.

Words and sounds together in a mixture of many of my favorite poetic voices. But then, I don't go in for normal poets too much. I like the slashing and analyzing sort of word play, as Burroughs says, "When you cut into the present the future leaks out."

The summer lies before us with the promise of new life, and of course, the beat of spring. Here is some beaty music with a spring theme. These are mainly "mega mixes" from some of the European dance compilations I had been buying at that time, and so they are raucous and varied with lots of different groups I could not really list here, but they get mentioned on the show.

We are not responsible for mental or behavioral aberrations that may be caused by this broadcast. This is a combination of tapes, broadcasts, snippets, edits, songs written and performed by church members that serve as  soundtracks to the Subgenius experience.

There is no way to list everything that was put into this program. This dense packing of brain cells without proper coolant, like frop, may lead to the continued hearing of this broadcast even after it has stopped. Always emerge from the experience slowly.

1993-03-10 Collusion

I have never really left it, as from time to time it seems to collect my thoughts and give me a lot of focus. Not too "in your face' and a lot of pieces that develop slowly but effectively. Only three groups here, but they have put out so much in this genre that mixing it together was a pleasure.

Music included: Controlled Bleeding, Zoviet France, Nocturnal Emissions, and all taken from multiple releases by each of these groups.

It was also a frenetic pace this week that must tell me something about the pace of my life during that period. I guess you could say it was a brand new second hand experience.

Perched on the sharp edge of winter, the sounds and vibes of a cold and hard environment which is nevertheless alive comes pouring out of this program. The light is fast fading and the air is incredibly dry as well as sharp and cold. Music and sound to accentuate an atmosphere.

1993-01-20 All On You and Me

Image via WikipediaAs you probably know, music from the On-U label has been one of my favorite acoustic categories. It was so good that selections from that label made it on to both sides of my radio show -- the Reggae and the experimental, in a fusion that I found very exciting. The use of production techniques and samples also made these songs very innovative at the time. They may not be so innovative now, but they still rock very hard and have an enduring political edge.

Musical assemblages include: Gary Clail and the On-U Sound System, Mark Stewart and the Maffia, Andy Fairley, Invisible Spike, Voice of Authority, Barmy Army, Tackhead, DJ Spike, and then a little non On-U with Kraftwerk.
