1997-08-06 Eclecto the Non-Obvious

I was feeling eclectic this week, so I did a very eclectic show. There are messages, but they are not very obvious, thus the title. You determine what it means to you. I didn’t even read a playlist, so this is largely a mystery to me as well.

1997-07-30 Big Fish Lounge

Lounge music takes the sounds of the 1950’s and 1960’s and worships them. The sounds are either recreated or sampled and then put together to sound like they are from another time. Yes, they are from another time. But, I like them! Here is a journey through the lounge music available in the late 1990’s. Music includes: Tipsy, James B and the Royal American Orchestra, Grus-Grus, and from Rhino Records we heard selections from Bachelor’s Guide to the Galaxy, Lounge Music Part 2, Mondo Exotica and more.

1997-05-28 Source Lab

I bought a random CD at Pure Pop Records because it looked interesting. It was. It came from France, and featured a multicultural group of artists pumping out music from the Paris suburbs that mixed rap, lounge, trip hop, acid jazz, dance and a lot more styles into a composite that I really found interesting. This show features my favorite cuts from the four CDs I managed to find. A lot of specific groups, like La Funk Mob, Baz Baz, Motor Bass, DJ Cam, La Chatte Rouge and many more. It was on the Caroline label. You can find more information at http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1020396/a/Source+Lab.htm for volume 1, and volume 2 can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Source-Lab-2-Various-Artists/dp/B0000035DV . Nice stuff. Enjoy.

1997-05-07 Zoviet Remix

Zoviet France is, in my view, the greatest industrial band ever. They even are not an industrial band, because what they do is unique and creative. They create industrial musical landscapes that make you think, feel and experience. This show involves a mix of some of my favorite Soviet France pieces. For more information and a discography, check out http://www.the-edge.ws/zoviet/index2.htm .

1997-03-26 Halcyon Orbit

Spacey new music is featured this week. I can clearly see my ascent into techno ambient groove that has accelerated once I stopped doing radio. This is a really delightul collection, and nine years later I really enjoyed listening to it. It was really bad of me not to read the play list, but so it goes. I wish I knew the artists and titles of some of these tunes.

1997-04-02 It Happens

Quite a bit of variety here within the genre, techno-dance-ambient along with some interested semi-ballads that even include *gasp* singing by human voices! Great music to groove to on an afternoon, or working on a snowy morning or whenever you need something to keep you stimulated but not too distracted. A couple of really great tuns at about one hour into the show. It was really bad of me not to read the play list, but so it goes. I wish I knew the artists and titles of some of these tunes.

1997-03-19 Breath of Zoar

More mostly instrumental sound journeys, and it is interesting that I was able to avoid repeat songs so well over a period of weeks where I intensely explored the same sort of techno-ambient genre. There is a wider variety of beat differentiation among these tunes than in some previous weeks I have posted here. Again, no play list.

1997-04-30 Challenge

More delightful techno-ambient music to tickle your fancy. The show title refers to the first cut played, called “The Challenge” in Psychick Warriors of Gaia. Music included: Psychick Warriors of Gaia, Deep Space Network, Higher Intelligence Agency, Banco de Gaia, OVNI, Trancesequence, UTU, Future Sound of London and more. 1997-04-16 Trance Lounge

Don’t let the above graphic fool you, this is not classic lounge music! What happens when you take sound samples from classic lounge music of the 1950s-1970s and put them together into a new musical expression? Find out on this week’s edition of the CMK! It starts out pretty loungey and gets more trancie as the show goes on. Artists include: Tipsy, UTU, Sandoz, Psylodub, OVNI, Mere Mortals, Astronomic, Feel, High Lonesome Sound System, Tony Hunt, Juno Reactor, Sabers of Paradise and a lot more.

1997-02-26 Here To Go

The theme of this show is the poetic cut-up by Williams S. Burroughs that begins it. Earth is a space station, and the reason we are here is so that we will go somewhere else. We are here to go. Spacey music and fun for almost any occasion. Artists include lots of spoken word by William S. Burroughs and a lot of techno and techno-ambient cuts. No play list this week.

1997-01-29 Dead City Seven

A fun bunch of mixing, mostly of System 7, one of my favorite groups at the time. I also mixed in a bit of Future Sound of London’s Dead City CD. System 7 are still in deft operation at http://www.a-wave.com/system7/ . Future Sound of London are at http://www.futuresoundoflondon.com/ . Upbeat and uplifting.

1996-04-24 Obsolete

Music about the confrontation between the individual human being and the brutal and inhumane systems that we have constructed to govern and control us. It isn’t always pretty. There are some solutions scattered through here, but they are few. Music included: Test Department, Front 242, Consolidated, Manufacturer (“Obsolete”), Blackhouse, Psychic TV and a lot more.

Music included: Moodswings, Tribal Drift, Chris & Cosey, Banco de Gaia, Tranquility Bass, Soul Eye, Another Green World, Air Liquide, Steve Roach, Fluid Motion, MLO, Neutron 9000 and more.

1996-08-07 National Debate Institute 1996

This is a classic compilation of some of the most interesting cuts I had encountered up to this time. As the 1996 National Debate Institute was concluding at UVM I did the following program with as many political trends and concepts as possible. Everything from the version of “Guns” by Negativland to the wild sample constructs of Sucking Chest Wound. Lots of radio broadcasts by “Bob” Dobbs of the Church of the Subgenius http://www.subgenius.com/ . No play list was read so no musician list this time. Lots of fun, though.

1996-08-11 & 1996-11-06 Unidentified Planet

I always gave my radio programs a name. One of my favorites was “Unidentified Planet” because of the Banco de Gaia song “Data Inadequate” and because it sounder so Doctor Who. Well, apparently I slipped a bit and gave two radio shows the same title within three months of one another. But, they were quite a bit different.
The August 11 show had lots of William S. Burroughs space-type clips, mostly of the cut-up variety, mixed over music as I saw fit. The November 11 show was very different, no Burroughs, lots of assorted music with beats, some ethnic-techno, and more fun. It might have actually been a night show because for some reason I played the sign-off cart at the end of the program, indicating the end of the broadcast day. Perhaps I was substituting for someone, but I never read a play list so it is hard to tell. Good listening, though.

1996-11-13 Space Time Continuum

More of my fascination with different dimensions and my need to express this through music. Another interesting program. Artists included: Autocre, Space Time Continuum, Ben Neil, Future Sound of London, System 7, Steve Fix, Freaky Chakra, and more. All new music this week.
