1998-04-22 Groove Release

IMAGE: By Sarah Scotland at http://infinitezoom.com/index.htm

It was clear even in 1998 what kind of music was really turning me on -- ambient beats and grooves. After I stopped doing radio I began tuning into http://somafm.com/ stations like Groove Salad and Space Station that I really liked this stuff. This program is an example of how I was finding and enjoying this kind of music some eight years ago. The artists included Rinneradio, Symetrics, 4 AM, Peace Division, the Persuader, Sun Electric, Isole, DJ Sneak, Enhanded, David Morley, the Potheads, Mandragora, Banco de Gaia and more.

1998-12-24/25 Chrstmas 1998

I have made a tradition of collecting and playing unusual holiday recordings around Christmas time. Well, this year Christmas came right on top of my radio show, so there was no avoiding it. I combine the sarcastic with the sadly serious in a unique blend of holiday cheer. Everything from Stan Freiberg to Belgian industrial tracks, from classic rock and roll about Santa and the satellite to the $6 Million Man christmas dramas. Check out both parts, Christmas eve and Christmas day, I believe. I also have a large section of Christmas reggae for your enjoyment. Cheers!

There are some gaps (side A & B of a cassette) and repeats on the two parts as they overlap slightly.

1990-10-17 New Thinking

Big beats, lots of voice overlays and an interesting group of artists makes for a very interesting program. The beats can be a bit harsh, but there is a decent amount of variety in there, and many of the voice overlays are entertaining. I head Adid’s voice in there as well. I hope she is doing well now. Artists included Tackhead, Hilt, Frontline Assembly, Nine Inch Nails, Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto, Shawdow Work, KMFDM, Chris & Cosey, Psychic TV, Negativland and more.

1998-01-14 Ambient Oceans

There was a lot of sweet ambient beat and groove stuff around so I built a show out of it. Great for easy listening, but not that easy for listening. Just right. Artists included Banco de Gaia (lots of cuts from the CD Big Men Cry), OVNI, Feel, Grand Popo Football Club, Extra Lucid, Moselli, Motor Bass, Rockers Hifi, Pentatoniks, and more.

1997-11-27 Thanks America

Thanksgiving has just passed here, and so I decided to throw another of my old Thanksgiving radio shows onto the list. It got me in that spirit to be thankful for, well, you know, stuff. Artists included: the Residents, Voice of Authority, Consolidated, DJ Spike, Laurie Anderson, Thick Pigeons, Nocturnal Emissions, the Timelords and more.

1997-12-10 Organ Delight

I had fallen in love with the funky old style organ music, and especially with Walter Wanderley, Astrud Gilberto, Denny McClain, Jackie Davis, Sir Julian, Gil Bucci Trio, Billy May & His Orchestra, Jackie Mittoo, Martin Denny, Trudy Pitts and a lot more. Enjoy this keyboard extravaganza.

98-01-21 Joy Division Salute

They were a short-lived band, but have been recognized worldwide as one of the most important bands in the history of rock and roll. I love this band. Ian Curtis put an end to all of this when he committed suicide in May of 1980. The group went on to become New Order after that. Something fresh but dark was revealed to me in this music. I keep listening to it over 25 years later.

1997-12-17 Eyeball Oddities

The Residents have always been one of my favorite bands. They are obscure but clever, creative but not droll. This radio show is composed of some unusual and hard to find recordings I have from the Residents. Enjoy in obscurity.

1998-02-18 Seven Spirits

The time is February 1998 and I have a big stack of techno-ambient music that I am excited to play. Nice stuff, and still very listenable today as far as the genre goes. Artists included: System 7, Juno Reactor, Psychosonics. Majestic 12, Pressure of Speech, Patrick O’Hearn, the Flying Lizards, Per Chernburg, Blind Faith, Aria, Huate and the Rabbit in the Moon and more.

1998-03-04 Vampyros Lesbos

Vampyros Lesbos was a movie made in 1971. It was a cheesy soft core sex movie. The plot outline is:
“Linda is a young American lawyer, working in a law office in Istanbul. During the night, she has passionate dreams in which a sexy brunette harasses, and makes love to her, from which she's unable to defend herself. A minor case about an inheritance forces her to travel to one of the small islands off the Turkish coast. Then, her nightmares come upon her - in a lively manner.”
What really interested people was the soundtrack music, which is very unusual and quite memorable. This radio program brings some of that soundtrack music together with some music done inspired by the soundtrack as well as music featuring a lot of samples from the soundtrack. Very interesting. This is the kind of stuff the College of Musical Knowledge was meant to present!

1997-11-13 Soft Drink

This show features the work of the band Negativland. It especially focuses on their release entitled Dispepsi, which uses their techniques of sound collage and original music on the campaign to change Coke to a new “formula” and whether it was all really a media hoax. Of course, these guys seem to like Pepsi better. Lots of fun if you like this kind of “media ecology” material.

1997-10-22 Space Dub

Sun Ra was a master at taking jazz into space. But many more people are doing that now with other musical forms, using ambient groove and dance electronica to transport us as well. This show is about that genre -- instrumentals that take us into space. The program features Rockers Hi-Fi, Connection Machine, Enhance, David Morley, System 7, Pentatonic and more. Blast off and enjoy.

1997-10-29 Halloween 1997

So when you collect strange and unusual records as long as I have you look forward to Halloween, a time to play the scary and cheesy stuff that you can’t put anywhere else. This is another example of this. Sound effects, storiesm songs, samples and more. Not the the faint of heart or for the children, but not that radical either.

1997-10-15 The Residents at 25

The 25th anniversary of The Residents was the occasion, and this is the radio program saluting their career.

According to http://residents.com/bh/ :

Over the course of a recording career spanning several decades, The Residents remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of wilful obscurity, the band's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise -- usually tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks -- and refusing to grant media interviews.
There are many things not known about The Residents, however these are not among those things. These are entirely different things not known.

• The Residents released the first ever punk single, “Satisfaction,” back in 1976, a full year before the Sex Pistols’ UK release of “God Save the Queen.” England’s MOJO Magazine recently voted The Residents' Satisfaction as the 74th most important punk single in history.
• After recording an entire album of songs that were one minute long in 1980, The Commercial Album, the group purchased one minute advertising spots on San Francisco’s most popular Top 40 radio station and had the entire album, all 40 songs, played by the station over a period of three days. Billboard Magazine wrote an editorial about it questioning whether it was advertising, payola, or art.
• The Residents are credited with “inventing” the form of the music video. Five of their earliest videos are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
• In 1991 The Residents released their album, Freak Show. In a show of media strength it came out as an LP, CD, soft and hard bound graphic novels, video, award winning CD-ROM, and a live production that ran for 21 performances at the Archa Theater in Prague, Czech Republic.
• The Residents, in 1993, wrote a ten hour score for The Discovery Channel nature show, Hunters.
• They have also scored 5 shows of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and assorted things for MTV.
• Two years in a row, they won awards from Entertainment Weekly magazine for top computer entertainment software. 1995: Freak Show CD-ROM, 1996: Bad Day on the Midway CD-ROM.
• In 2002 The Residents released their first DVD, Icky Flix. It was NOT concert footage.
• Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller) was part of the touring Mole Show in 1982-3.
• Marlboro cigarettes commissioned a performance piece for a German promotion in 1997, Disfigured Night. Paranoid that the group was making fun of them, Marlboro asked that there be no appearance by Residents’ regular, Mr. Skull.
• The album Eskimo was in the final list for nominations for a Grammy Award in 1980. It did not become an actual nominee, however. Still The Residents were invited to the ceremonies and party and shared a table with Donna Summer.

I hope you enjoy this. I did.

1997-08-27 Temporal Chasm

That good old fashioned restful and comforting drone takes over the program this week. I did not seem to read a playlist, so I am not sure what all of this is, but I won’t guess. Yes, Zoviet France and a lot more. Good for relaxing, working or even for meditating while you attempt to travel without moving or through time. No promises, no guarantees. Do not fall in, you may not get out.

1997-08-21 William S. Burroughs

This radio program salutes William S. Burroughs, the writer, poet and cultural terrorist. He died 2 August 1997 in Lawrence, Kansas. His voice was probing like no other. His ideas blew apart the 20th century. Listen and enjoy.
Here is a passage about him from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Burroughs
Burroughs is often called one of the greatest and most influential writers of the twentieth century, most notably by Norman Mailer whose quote on Burroughs, "The only American novelist living today who may conceivably be possessed by genius", appears on many Burroughs publications. Others, however, consider him overrated. Others still consider his concepts and attitude more influential than his prose. Prominent admirers of Burroughs's work have included British critic and biographer Peter Ackroyd, and the authors J.G. Ballard, Angela Carter, Jean Genet, William Gibson, and Ken Kesey.
Burroughs continues to be named as an influence by contemporary writers of fiction. Both the New Wave and, especially, the cyberpunk schools of science fiction, admirers from the late 1970s, early 1980s milieu of this sub-genre including William Gibson and John Shirley, to name only two. First published in 1982, the British slipstream fiction magazine (which later evolved into a more traditional science fiction magazine) Interzone paid tribute to him with its choice of name.
He is also cited as a major influence by musicians Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Pier Nine Brawl and Ian Curtis of the band Joy Division. He remains controversial because of his homosexuality, drug use, and the often criticized obscene or misogynistic tone of his works, though it should be noted that Burroughs's ideas about and attitudes towards women gradually became more friendly as he aged. Burroughs was regarded as being extremely intelligent and a generally quiet person.
The themes of drugs, homosexuality and death, common to Burroughs's routines, are taken up by Dennis Cooper, of whom Burroughs said, "Dennis Cooper, God help him, is a born writer." Cooper, in return, wrote, in his essay 'King Junk', "along with Jean Genet, John Rechy, and Ginsberg, [Burroughs] helped make homosexuality seem cool and highbrow, providing gay liberation with a delicious edge." Splatterpunk writer Poppy Z. Brite has also continuously referenced this aspect of Burroughs' work.
Burroughs's works continue to be referenced years after his death. For example, a November 2004 episode of the TV series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation included an evil character named Dr. Benway (named for an amoral physician who appears in a number of Burroughs's works). This is an echo of the hospital scene in the movie Repo Man, made during Burroughs's lifetime, in which both Dr. Benway and Mr. Lee (a Burroughs pen name) are paged.
The song "Seven Souls" by Material, which features Burroughs, figured prominently in the 2006 season premiere episode of "The Sopranos" entitled "Members Only."
